Welcome to Mi8!  To start accessing your Hosted Exchange mailbox, calendar and other facilities, you will need Microsoft Outlook software installed on your PC, and it must be configured to reach our system. (You may also use Outlook Web Access, but most users prefer Microsoft Outlook.)

If you are using a PC and you already have  Outlook 2000, 2002/XP, or 2003 installed on your computer, you can use our FastInstall tool to automatically configure the software to reach our servers (available on our Downloads page). If you do not have Outlook installed, you can download the Outlook installer from the Downloads page.

Before You Begin

First, a few notes that will help you prepare your plan for launching services with Mi8's Hosted Microsoft Exchange:

  • Private Domain Names:  if you are using your own company's domain name, please note that you must redirect your Mail Exchange (MX) records according to Mi8's specifications.  (This information will be sent to you during the setup process.) The MX records are part of your domain record; just as your URL is set up in databases across the Internet (domain name servers) to point at your web site, so your MX records are recorded in those same databases to point at your mail server. When you make a change to your DNS, it can take up to 72 hours for that change to populate across all of the domain name servers in the world, and during this transition period, you may receive some emails at your old address, and some at your new Mi8 mailboxes.  Mi8's Client Support Service team is expert at managing these migrations, and your sales rep will coordinate this plan to guarantee the transition goes smoothly.

  • Importing Data:  for small groups of users with data in their Outlook files or an internal Exchange deployment, Mi8 can provide your users with coaching and best practices documentation on how to export data from your old systems, and import it to your new systems.  For larger organizations with more complex export/import requirements, Mi8's Systems Operations Team will work with you to get your data into your new Mi8 mailboxes.

  • Wireless Devices:  Mi8 provides services for a wide variety of wireless devices, including the popular BlackBerry email pagers/phones, the Treo 600 and 650, and a wide variety of PDAs and Smartphones.  However, we do not sell these devices or the airtime packages that go along with them; we only provide the services that enable these devices to interact with your Hosted Exchange mailboxes.  If you'd like to provision your wireless device to connect with your Mi8 mailboxes, please see the appropriate section below, or contact Mi8's Client Support Services.

Getting Started
Once you've signed up for Mi8's Hosted Exchange Service, you can get started right away using Outlook Web Access! Just point your browser at https://mi8owa.mi8.com and log on with your username and password - no setup is required. Outlook Web Access is a great way to get to your email when you're away from your primary PC.

Connecting With Microsoft Outlook
Depending on the version of Outlook you are using, the operating system on your PCs and your Internet connectivity restrictions, there are 2 ways to access Mi8's Hosted Exchange Service using the Microsoft Outlook

  • Outlook connection to Exchange Server via HTTPS (note: only for Windows XP with Outlook 2003). This provides a highly secure connection, and is the default connectivity mode for users who meet the technical requirements.

  • Standard Outlook interface to Exchange Server via an Internet connection

The FastInstall program, available from our Downloads page, will automatically detect your version of Outlook and will configure your system to connect in the optimal mode.

Mi8 offers fee-based options for connecting to our system as well, including Virtual Private Networks, point-to-point connections, and more.  For more information, please contact Mi8's Sales Team.

Connecting With Microsoft Outlook Express
You can also connect to Mi8's Hosted Exchange Service using Outlook Express. Note that with this configuration, you will not be able to use a number of features, including shared Contacts, Tasks, and Calendars.  To get instructions for connecting via Outlook Express, please contact Mi8's Client Support Services.

Remember, too, that if you don't own Outlook 2003, you can download it for free from our Downloads page.
